Ellen O'Brien and Arthur Finnis
Ellen was the daughter of Thomas and Mary O'Brien (nee
Butler), born in Irishtown,
Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.
She married Arthur Richard Finnis who rose to be a Captain in the Royal Field
Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross.
They lived in Swansea, South Wales and for a time Bridget
Florence Key (my grandmother Florrie) lived with them becoming very close to
them.
Florrie
often referred to Captain Finnis as 'Daddy Finnis' - The picture
of him inspecting troops with Edward Prince of Wales (Edward VIIIth) sat on the
fireplace at 79a High Street, Teddington, for many years. The photograph
is believed to be of a parade in Swansea and is probably taken not long after
WW1.
They adopted a niece of Captain Finnis - Bridget - Bridie - as their own
daughter. The picture (right) is taken in 1937 in Swansea and is of
Florrie, Ellen, Arthur and Bridie.
The 1901 Census records Arthur and Ellen together in Sussex:
