Nick and Annie Tenaglia (nee Woodcock)
Edith married Guiseppe Nicola (Nick) Tenaglia - converting to catholicism to do so - on 1st August 1927 in the Catholic Church, Peterborough.
Nick was Italian - Peterborough has a significant Italian community - and they set up a taylors and cleaners business. First in Queenstreet and then moved further along the street as the business expanded. Nick worked 7am to 9pm, he ran the cleaning and starching and Annie the ironing and pressing. At one point of high trade it was costing 1/6sh to have a suit cleaned and they were charging 7/6sh making a small fortune out of the American soldiers based in the city. After the war they moved to Lincoln Road and then to New Road. Peterborough Directory for 1955 records 5 Whalley Street, Tenaglia, Guiseppe Nicola and Woodcock, Mary Jane.

Annie was killed tragically on 26th May 1957 in a car accident on Lincoln Road, Peterborough. Nick and Annie had gone for a Sunday stroll when a police car chasing a van, crashed and killed Annie on Lincoln Road on the corner of Scotney Street. The Policeman, PC Parker, was distraught and resigned from the police. There was a four year legal battle with the police and Nick got £4,000 compensation from the Police. However, the pressure of the tragedy proved too much and he fell ill through the shock. He moved in at first with his in-laws in Eastfield Road and then moved back to Whalley Street. However, his morale slowly dropped and slipped and he resolved to move back to Italy - in about 1964 a niece came over from Italy to help him move and he returned to his family home not far from home. He passed away soon after. |
